Glue-up alternating color wood strips
2 strips extra, each 2" extra long
Crossut strips then stagger glue-up
Route v-grooves along glue lines
As so.  An accurate fence helps.

1. Glued teak & maple strips.
2. Glue double strips together, scrape off glue squeeze out when dry.
3.  Cross-cut into checkered strips, shown in back.  Stagger these strips and glue them up.
4. Centering bit used to route decorative grooves along glue line.  Here is proof how accurate, that is uniform width, your rip cuts are on your table saw.  Also proof of how accurate your router fence and setup is.

6.  Look mom no legs.  Chess board is glued with contact cement to a MDF center panel.  The panel floats to allow for wood movement through the season.
